Microsoft will be ending support for Windows XP as well as Office 2003 on April 8th, 2014. Once support ends, no more security updates will be provided for XP or Office 2003 during Microsoft's monthly Patch Tuesday schedule.
To protect the network from future vulnerabilities, LSU will be disabling network access to detected XP machines starting April 9th, 2014. To avoid service disruption, technology professionals should work with their XP users to migrate to a later operating system (recommended Windows 7 or Windows 8 - visit the these links for system requirements). Likewise, Office 2003 users will also need to update to a later version (recommended Office 2010 or Office 2013). These operating systems and office suites can be downloaded via TigerWare.
The Microsoft Assessment & Planning (MAP) Toolkit is a very useful utility to assist technology professionals in detecting operating systems and software. Contact Quang Le (firstname.lastname@example.org) for more information or configuring and running the MAP Toolkit.
Some devices may run legacy software dependent on Windows XP. LSU Information Security & Risk recommends users of legacy software:
- check with the vendor for software updates
- test the software using Windows 7 compatibility mode
- determine if the software can run without network/Internet access
