Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Plans are the responsibilities of the individual departments and units across campus. Information Technology Services (ITS) works to backup mission critical facets required by the University to function.

What is included in the ITS Recovery Plan?
- Mainframe: Backup tapes of the mainframe data are shipped off-site on a daily basis. The majority of these backups are stored in a facility in the Baton Rouge area, but one copy per week is stored in a facility well outside of the Baton Rouge area.
- Other ITS Servers: Non-mainframe ITS Production servers (AIX, Linux, Windows, etc) are backed up across the network to a Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) server. Some are backed up directly to a server located in a state-run data center. Others are backed up to a TSM server housed in Frey, but later in the day are copied to the state-run data center. The servers are incrementally backed up overnight at various schedules, some daily and others weekly. The servers backed up weekly are scheduled on different days of the week to distribute activity on the TSM backup server.
- Departmental Servers: Creating backups for servers belonging to departments, whether housed at Frey or elsewhere, is the responsibility of the individual department.
- Redundant Systems: ITS has built redundancy into much of its topology for critical services. There are two telephone switches housed in separate buildings on campus, redundant network routers, and multiple instances of Domain Name Service (DNS) and Windows Domain Controllers (a.k.a. Active Directory) servers in separate buildings.
- Segregated Systems: In some cases where multiple servers work in parallel to support the transaction demand, servers have been deployed in separate buildings, which would continue the functionality of the application, though likely to degrade throughput due to overloading.
- Hot-site: A hot-site has been contracted for restoring mainframe data and processing and some web applications.
- E-mail services: LSU is in the process of moving to a cloud-based e-mail solution that includes disaster recovery measures. Â Student e-mail is already operated in the cloud.
Other ITS Servers: Other ITS servers and services not mentioned above will be addressed soon.
- Other Departmentâ€™s Servers: ITS DOES NOT include any departmental servers, housed at Frey or elsewhere, in its Disaster Recovery Plan. Â Departments are, however, required to file their disaster recovery plans with the Emergency Operations Center.
